Announcing ‘DIAMOCI UN TONO 2023’!
Welcome to the 12 th edition!
The Jesuit Education Foundation is pleased to announce its participation in the well-established music competition “Diamoci un Tono” (or ‘Setting the Tone’) in 2023, which offers Primary to High School students attending schools from the Euro-Mediterranean province of the Society of Jesus an opportunity to showcase their talent and creative ability.
This twelfth edition in 2023 aspires to highlight music and the accompanying lyrics as a vehicle for
conveying messages of hope and peace intended for everyone, both male and female, coming from all different countries, backgrounds and cultures, as well as promoting a common commitment, as
championed by Pope Francis, to “make the Word the focal point, stretch the boundaries, reach out to people and create opportunities for meeting others.” Far from being impartial, the Word “does not promote leaving things just the way they are. It does not advocate settling for a quiet life. Quite the contrary: it deliberately unsettles us, challenges us, provokes us to foster change. And when it enters into us, it converts the heart and the mind.”
This year’s contest and grand finale evening will be an important event on the journey that will culminate in the Jesuit schools having another audience with Pope Francis, on June 10, as part of the invitation to establish a new “educational pact”. The winners of this year’s ‘Setting the Tone’ contest will also perform live before the Pope during the audience, which will be held at the Vatican.
As stipulated in the Regulations, three separate categories by age group are eligible to participate in the contest, making it open to all students attending the Primary, First Grade Secondary and Second Grade Secondary Jesuit Education Foundation schools.
Entrants taking part in the competition are invited to submit published or unpublished songs with related texts (which may be sung as lyrics of a song or as a choral piece, or recited) that promote the Word as a way of expanding boundaries, bringing about change (internally and externally) and conveying messages of hope and peace for all, which are the focal themes of this edition of the contest.
The teachers in charge of organising the competition at all participating schools are requested to submit videos featuring the musical performances by their students or groups of students wishing to compete, and are asked select six pieces (two per category) by 31 March 2023.
The shortlisted videos will be evaluated by a Central Committee, which in turn will select three contestants per school (one per category), who will then qualify to perform at the grand finale evening on 12 May 2023 in Turin.
The musical pieces performed by the contestants may be unreleased or cover versions, instrumental or vocal compositions, and there are no genre or style restrictions. The videos submitted by the schools must be self-produced and may not exceed 3 minutes and thirty seconds in total (3’:30”). With regard to the vocals, participants are invited to choose or compose lyrics that promote the values underpinning the schools’ educational approach. The message contained in the text proposed by the contestant, whether previously released or not, will also be an intrinsic part of the evaluation made by the judging committee. In the case of a piece that is purely instrumental being submitted, a short introductory text about the presentation is also required.
The grand final will take place in Turin on 12 May 2023, and the live performances will also be streamed on the internet that same evening. During the competition, the selected contestants will each perform their piece of music in front of the audience, and at the end of the evening the three overall winners, one for each category, will be announced.
Good luck to everyone, and may the best team win!
