The Ignatian Day in Messina
At the Collegio S.Ignazio in Messina, last Friday, May 24th, a day dedicated to solidarity and volunteerism was held, reflecting the essence of Ignatian humanism that promotes the service of ‘men and women for others’.
Students, alumni – along with their families, teaching and non-teaching staff, and the Administration – came together in a common act of charity, engaging in volunteer activities and fundraising for missions. The first Ignatian Day was organized by General Director Prof. Maria Muscherà, Director of Pastoral Care Prof. Giacomo Sorrenti, and sector coordinators Profs. Caterina Zappia and Giuseppe Formica.
The idea arose from the desire to continually renew the belonging to the Society of Jesus, to bear witness to Ignatian identity, and to make this specific charism present in the city. The event was themed around the life and spiritual experience of Ignatius of Loyola, implemented through moments of solidarity, reflection, prayer, conviviality, play, and sports. Contributions to various solidarity projects were made possible by purchasing crafts made by children from the kindergarten and primary school and by students from the secondary school, displayed in the fair’s stands. Numerous entertainment moments, such as plays and performances, were enjoyed. The proceeds from the day were donated to missions, to support the charitable works of the Rogationists in the city, and to the education fund. It was an opportunity for our Institute to open up to the city, to strengthen the ancient cultural and social bond with it.
The event took place in an atmosphere of joy and participation, highlighting the strong connection between the community of Collegio Sant’Ignazio and the values of solidarity and social commitment. The students demonstrated a deep sense of responsibility and altruism, putting into practice the teachings received in the classrooms and actively contributing to the well-being of the neediest. The participation of families was fundamental to the event’s success, highlighting the value of collaboration and the sharing of common goals. Parents and relatives actively supported the students in their initiatives, encouraging them to do their best to help the less fortunate. The craft markets represented the heart of Ignatian Day, offering participants the opportunity to purchase unique and creative products made by the students themselves. Each product told a story of commitment and solidarity, turning a simple purchase into an act of generosity.
In this context, the Sant’Ignazio award was presented – in the presence of the Mayor of Messina, Dr. Federico Basile – to Dr. Giuseppe Campagna, President of ATM (Azienda Trasporti Messina S.p.a.). Established on this occasion, the award aims to publicly recognize those in our territory who have distinguished themselves through work aligned with the educational project of our college and thus with the Ignatian charism. ATM has stood out in the territory for its constant commitment to sustainable mobility, which positively impacts environmental protection, in full harmony with the Institute’s Educational Project.
The event concluded with a Holy Mass presided over by Jesuit priest Rosario Meli SJ. The event left an indelible mark on the school community, strengthening its commitment to promoting human and social values. Ignatian Day demonstrated that even small gestures can make a difference in the world, inspiring students to continue the work of service and sharing in the footsteps of Ignatius of Loyola. Ignatian Day was a valuable opportunity to reflect on the true meaning of solidarity and volunteerism, inviting everyone to do their part to build a better world for all.
