Every new school year begins with a silent question: what kind of future do we want to build?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

September is a season of new beginnings\u2014of empty notebooks waiting to be filled, classrooms coming back to life, and relationships taking shape once again. It is also a time when schools can help students, families, and educators look ahead not with fear, but with confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pastoral theme chosen by Fondazione Gesuiti Educazione<\/strong> for the new school year, \u201cThe Future Is Yet to Be Written,\u201d<\/strong> is rooted in this vision. Building on last year\u2019s focus on peace, it invites us to embrace the future with hope while recognizing the personal and collective responsibility each of us has in shaping it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a world marked by conflict, uncertainty, and rapid change, many young people experience the future as something to fear rather than an opportunity to embrace. At the same time, increasingly fragile personal relationships can lead to isolation, discouragement, and a growing sense of detachment from reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For this reason, educating today also means helping young people rediscover that the future is not predetermined. It is an open horizon\u2014a story that takes shape through choices, relationships, responsibility, and hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The future\u00a0is\u00a0not\u00a0already\u00a0written<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h6>\n\n\n\n

Speaking about the future means engaging with one of the deepest dimensions of education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every student grows up in a world that offers countless opportunities but also constant pressure, uncertainty, and narratives often dominated by crisis. Wars, climate change, social instability, technological transformation, and economic uncertainty can all contribute to the feeling that the future is fragile\u2014or even already compromised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This theme also echoes a particularly timely message addressed by Pope Leo XIV<\/strong> to the students of Sapienza University of Rome<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI imagine you sometimes carefree, enjoying your youth, which, even in a troubled world marked by terrible injustices, allows you to feel that the future is still to be written and that no one can take it away from you.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is a particularly meaningful invitation for a generation that lives much of its daily life in the digital world. Technology offers extraordinary opportunities for learning, creativity, and communication, but it can also silently influence our desires, relationships, and decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Educating for responsibility therefore means helping young people become the authors of their own lives rather than passive consumers of content. It means accompanying them in developing discernment, critical thinking, and inner freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Within the Ignatian tradition, discernment is precisely this: learning to recognize what moves the heart, what leads toward the good, and what enables us to make free and conscious choices. In a world that constantly offers immediate answers, education invites us to ask deeper questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From peace to\u00a0hope<\/strong><\/h6>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Future Is Yet to Be Written\u201d<\/strong> naturally continues the journey begun with last year\u2019s pastoral theme on peace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Peace is not simply the absence of conflict. It is a daily responsibility expressed through the way we look at others, listen to them, speak about them, and relate to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking to the future with hope means recognizing that every gesture has the power to shape history differently. A word can heal or wound. A relationship can open new possibilities or close them. A personal decision can become a seed of the common good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this sense, the future is never written alone. It is written within a community, through relationships that encourage, support, and inspire responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Overcoming\u00a0apathy\u00a0through\u00a0relationships<\/strong><\/h6>\n\n\n\n

One of the greatest challenges facing young people today is not only fear of the future, but the feeling that they cannot truly influence it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the world seems too complex or distant, apathy can take root. People withdraw, observe from the sidelines, and stop believing they can make a difference. Education, however, has the mission of reopening spaces of trust and possibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ignatian pedagogy has always promoted the integral formation of the person: not only knowledge, but conscience; not only competencies, but relationships; not only preparation for the future, but responsibility in the present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For this reason, the new pastoral theme encourages us to rediscover the strength of human relationships. No one finds their path alone. Every future is shaped through encounters, meaningful conversations, inspiring examples, and relationships that help us grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A personal and\u00a0shared\u00a0responsibility<\/strong><\/h6>\n\n\n\n

“The Future Is Yet to Be Written”<\/strong> is not simply an optimistic slogan. It is a call to responsibility. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For students, it means recognizing themselves as active participants in their own journey. For educators, it means accompanying without replacing, offering guidance, listening, and opportunities for discernment. For school communities, it means creating environments where every person feels seen, welcomed, and encouraged to become the best version of themselves. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

From this perspective, school becomes the place where the future already begins to take shape\u2014in everyday choices, in the way people relate to one another, in the quality of relationships, and in the ability to cultivate hope even when the present appears uncertain. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
