At the center of his thought and spiritual experience lies discernment: a process that does not concern only the major decisions of life, but also the daily way of engaging with reality, interpreting it, and finding one’s place within it.

In a time marked by complexity, speed, and a multiplicity of stimuli, educating to discernment means offering tools to inhabit the world with awareness, freedom, and responsibility.

Discernment as an Educational Process

In the Ignatian perspective, discernment is not a technique, but a process that involves the whole person. It is a journey that requires listening, reflection, the ability to revisit experience, and to recognize what leads toward the good.

For Ignatius, discernment is above all a way of caring for people, helping them recognize what guides their lives toward God and the good. His mission of “helping souls” finds its concrete expression in this process: reading what moves the heart, discerning what opens us up and what closes us off, and accompanying each person in the search for an authentic direction.

To educate to discernment means accompanying students in developing this capacity. It is not about providing ready-made answers, but about helping to ask the right questions, to distinguish between what is superficial and what is meaningful, between what attracts immediately and what builds over time.

In this sense, education becomes a space in which one learns to think, to feel, and to choose with awareness.

Interior Freedom

One of the central elements of Ignatian discernment is interior freedom. Not a freedom understood as the absence of constraints, but as the ability not to be determined solely by external pressures or immediate impulses.

Interior freedom allows one to make authentic choices, orienting decisions not on the basis of contextual pressure, but starting from a deeper understanding of oneself and reality.

In the educational context, this means accompanying students in recognizing their motivations, in taking distance from what influences them automatically, and in developing greater autonomy of judgment.

To educate to interior freedom is to offer tools not to be passively carried along by events, but to actively take part in shaping one’s own path.

Formation of Conscience

Discernment is closely linked to the formation of conscience. In the Ignatian tradition, conscience is not understood as a static reality, but as a dynamic one, shaped through experience, reflection, and dialogue.

Forming conscience means helping the person recognize the value of their choices, understand their consequences, and orient themselves responsibly within complexity.

This process requires time and accompaniment. It cannot be reduced to a set of rules, but involves an inner work that engages cognitive, emotional, and ethical dimensions.

In education, the formation of conscience becomes a fundamental goal: not only transmitting knowledge, but contributing to the growth of individuals capable of evaluating, choosing, and acting with responsibility.

Inhabiting the World with Awareness

To educate to discernment means preparing individuals to inhabit the world. Not to undergo it passively, but to interpret it, to take part in it, and to contribute to its development.

In the thought of Saint Ignatius, formation is never an end in itself. It is always oriented toward action, toward a presence in the world capable of uniting competence and responsibility, knowledge and attentiveness to others.

Discernment allows one to read reality more deeply, to grasp its dynamics, and to identify possibilities for action. In this sense, it becomes a tool for active and conscious participation in social life.

An Educational Style for Today

Within the path promoted by Fondazione Gesuiti Educazione, education to discernment takes shape in a concrete style: accompanying students in revisiting their experiences, fostering moments of reflection, and creating spaces in which choices can be understood, not only made.

It is an approach that does not aim to simplify complexity, but to provide tools to engage with it. An education that does not only prepare for the future, but helps to live the present with greater awareness.

Saint Ignatius of Loyola, through his experience and method, reminds us that to educate does not mean directing every step, but helping to recognize direction. It means accompanying the formation of a freedom capable of choosing, of a conscience capable of guiding, and of a presence capable of inhabiting the world with responsibility.

The figure of Saint Ignatius of Loyola represents one of the most significant reference points for understanding the deeper meaning of education within the Jesuit tradition.
