Beyond the technical aspects of the measure, this news brings attention back to one of the fundamental principles of our educational system: the right to education and the possibility for every family to freely choose the educational path they consider most suitable for their children.

Education is one of the fundamental rights of every person. It is not simply access to schooling, but the opportunity to grow, develop one’s abilities, build meaningful relationships, and prepare to participate consciously in society.

A right that belongs to everyone

Article 34 of the Italian Constitution states that “School is open to everyone.” This principle calls for a collective commitment to making education truly accessible, ensuring that no one is excluded from educational opportunities because of their economic or social circumstances.

At the same time, the Italian National Education System recognizes both state schools and state-recognized private schools, which are equally entrusted with providing a public educational service and contributing to the formation of future generations.

Law No. 62 of March 10, 2000 marked a decisive milestone by incorporating state-recognized private schools into the public education system and clearly defining their role, requirements, and responsibilities. However, this legal recognition has not yet resulted in full economic equality: families who choose a state-recognized private school still bear a significant portion of the cost of a service that, by law, is an integral part of the public education system.

Ensuring the right to education therefore means creating the conditions that allow every family to make their educational choice freely and confidently, identifying the environment that best responds to their children’s needs and personal growth.

Education as a meaningful choice

Choosing a school means much more than selecting a place where knowledge is acquired.

Every school community offers its own educational project, relational style, and way of accompanying students in their human, cultural, and personal development. It is through these everyday experiences that young people learn not only to understand the world, but also to understand themselves, build relationships, and develop a sense of responsibility.

For this reason, making educational freedom truly effective means recognizing the value of diverse educational opportunities and enabling families to choose the path they believe is most appropriate.

A perspective centered on the person

The educational tradition of the Society of Jesus has always placed the whole person at its center. Education is not limited to the transmission of knowledge, but accompanies every student in developing their abilities, inner freedom, and responsibility toward others.

From this perspective, the right to education takes on an even deeper meaning: offering every individual the opportunity to grow according to their own talents within a community capable of welcoming, accompanying, and valuing each person.

Building the future through education

Every initiative that helps make education more accessible is an opportunity to reflect on the value of education as a common good.

Investing in schools means investing in people, in their potential, and in the society of tomorrow. For this reason, the right to education concerns not only the present of today’s students, but also the future of the entire community.

Promoting an open, inclusive, and genuinely accessible school system means continuing to build an educational model that places every person at its center, enabling each individual to find their own path and contribute, through their talents, to the common good.

In recent days, state-recognized private schools have returned to the public spotlight following the signing of the implementing decree concerning the Bonus for families.
