This is what happened on Friday, May 22 in Milan, during the meeting of the Global Citizenship Referents of the network of schools of the Fondazione Gesuiti Educazione (FGE), belonging to the Euro Mediterranean Province.

The meeting, hosted at the Foundation’s headquarters, brought together the Referents from the seven schools of the network: Leone XIII in Milan, Istituto Sociale in Turin, Massimo in Rome, Gonzaga in Palermo, S. Ignazio in Messina, St Aloysius College in Malta, and Collegio Meshkalla in Shkodër, Albania. Alongside them were the Director and the Educational Area team of the Foundation.

The day unfolded in a simple and fraternal atmosphere, marked by the shared desire to engage in dialogue, listen to one another, and exchange educational experiences capable of concretely interpreting the themes of global citizenship within the different school realities.

An experience of community that begins with welcome

The value of the meeting was already evident the evening before, when participants attended the musical Mamma Mia! performed by the students of Istituto Leone XIII.

More than just a recreational moment, the performance offered a concrete testimony of what the schools of the Jesuit network seek to build every day: spaces in which students can express their talents, collaborate, take responsibility, and experience the joy of being together.

Through theatre, music, and shared participation, the students showed how educational experience can become an opportunity for both personal and communal growth.

An integrated educational vision

The working day opened with greetings from the Director of JECSE (Jesuit European Committee for Primary and Secondary Education), who encouraged the networking journey carried forward by the schools of the Euro Mediterranean Province.

The Educational Area of the Foundation then presented the work accompanying schools toward an increasingly integrated approach to educational projects within a shared vision, coherent with the Guidelines for the Ignatian Curriculum published in 2017.

From this perspective, themes such as global citizenship, tutoring, safeguarding, digital technologies, and pastoral care are not considered separate fields, but deeply interconnected dimensions that form part of a single path oriented toward the integral formation of the person.

The goal is to build educational environments capable of accompanying students not only in the development of competencies, but also in the growth of awareness, responsibility, and attention toward the common good.

Sharing practices to build the futur

One of the central moments of the meeting was dedicated to the sharing of experiences developed within the individual schools. Each institution presented practices, projects, and initiatives related to global citizenship, placing at the service of the network the tools, reflections, and methodologies tested over recent years.

Alongside the experiences already underway, participants also shared hopes, needs, and future perspectives, with the aim of jointly designing new network initiatives capable of responding concretely to the needs of the different educational communities.

Within this context, CeFAEGI.EUM, the Training Center for Jesuit Educational Activity of the Euro Mediterranean Province, also presented a preview of next year’s thematic seminar, dedicated to the themes of “Justice and Peace.”

The day concluded with a visit to Istituto Leone XIII guided by the General Director, who accompanied guests through the kindergarten spaces and the school church.

Educating to develop a gaze capable of going beyond

The journey of global citizenship within the schools of the Euro Mediterranean Province is rooted in shared work that has grown over the years through dialogue among schools, educators, and students.

The possibility of connecting the different “common threads” of the Educational Area now allows for the development of an increasingly integrated approach, in harmony with the worldwide Jesuit school network and with an educational vision oriented toward Peace and Justice.

The horizon of this journey is to help students recognize that their school experience can become a space in which to develop a deeper understanding of reality and of their own place within the world.

Ignatian education invites young people to cultivate a sensitivity capable of going beyond the surface of things, helping them discover, within the beauty of everyday educational experience, that “most beautiful” which speaks directly to their lives and opens them to the possibility of authentic and complete fulfillment.

There are moments when everyday educational experience opens itself to a broader horizon and recognizes itself as part of a shared journey.
