Raised at the German court of Thuringia after her engagement to Ludwig IV, she grew up in an environment that combined political education, courtly life and a deep religious sensibility. Her closeness to the Friars Minor helped her embrace the message of Saint Francis of Assisi, inspiring her lifelong dedication to the poor and the sick.

With Ludwig she had three children – Hermann, Sophia and Gertrude – and their marriage is remembered as a relationship rooted in shared values and mutual support. When Ludwig died in 1227, while preparing to depart for the Sixth Crusade, Elizabeth was profoundly affected and chose to devote herself entirely to a life of charity. She settled in Marburg, living simply and offering daily service to those most in need.

The canonization process and the spread of her cult

Elizabeth died on 17th November 1231, and reports of healings and favors attributed to her intercession began to circulate immediately. Pilgrims flocked to her tomb, giving rise to a widespread reputation for holiness.

The canonization inquiry gathered testimonies from family members, servants and people who claimed to have been healed. A key figure in this process was Conrad of Marburg, her spiritual director, who observed her closely and helped present the coherence of her faith and works to the Church.

In 1235, in Perugia, Pope Gregory IX officially canonized her. A large Gothic sanctuary was soon built in Marburg, which became a major pilgrimage destination. Her relics were solemnly translated in 1236, in the presence of Emperor Frederick II.

Iconography and spirituality: the miracle of the roses

One of the most well-known episodes associated with Saint Elizabeth is the miracle of the roses. According to tradition, while she was secretly carrying bread to the poor, she was surprised by her husband. When asked what she was hiding under her cloak, the loaves reportedly transformed into roses – a sign of divine favor and a symbol of her mission of charity.

This story became one of the most enduring symbols in her iconography.

Works of mercy and care for the poor

For Elizabeth, charity was not only a spiritual aspiration but a concrete, daily practice. She used her resources to support the poor, distributed alms, sold valuable possessions to help the most vulnerable and personally visited the sick.

In 1228 she founded in Marburg a hospital inspired by Franciscan spirituality, dedicated to the care of the poor and the ill. The institution marked the culmination of her commitment to solidarity. The Teutonic Order later built a new hospital in her honor, the “Elisabethhospital,” which eventually became a university clinic.

A witness that still speaks today

The life of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary continues to offer inspiration. Her example embodies values deeply connected to the Jesuit educational tradition, such as care for others, service, social responsibility and the ability to look beyond oneself.

In a world still marked by inequality, poverty and conflict, her witness calls us to unite spirituality and concrete action, offering a compelling model of compassion in motion.

Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, a model of Christian charity and service: a life dedicated to the poor, care for the vulnerable and a legacy of compassion still alive today.

[299
["post-7742","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-insights
